There is a moment in music — and Bret Arenson knows it well, having played guitar through the clubs of San Francisco and the back streets of Paris — when a riff stops being notes and becomes pure presence. This painting lives in that moment. Standing before it, you feel the time it took not as duration but as accumulation: gesture upon gesture, each one answering the last, building a surface that feels less like a painted canvas than like a living field caught mid-breath. The palette speaks of late October light on the Marin hills above Sausalito, of the moment when a hillside ignites in amber and rust before the rains come in off the Bay. But Arenson never planned any of this. He listened — to his body, to the brush, to whatever the previous mark was asking for — and let the image find its own form. Green flickers beneath the orange like something trying to hold on, the mauve ground surfacing between gestures like the grey of the Bay on a winter afternoon. The whole painting pulses with a rhythm that feels biological, tidal. To live with this work is to live with that rhythm. It will change in different lights, in different moods, offering a dense morning reading and an open evening one. It is the kind of painting a collector returns to, finding something new each time — a darker green knot in the lower left, a sweep of gold near the centre that wasn't visible before. Arenson's curiosity about what the next gesture will reveal is baked into the surface; it becomes the viewer's curiosity too.
