Bret Arenson didn't begin this painting with a plan. He began it with a breath. Standing in his studio in the Schoonmaker Building on the Sausalito waterfront, he let his body lead — each mark a response to the one before it, a conversation between hand, tool, and canvas that unfolded in real time. The result is a surface that carries the memory of that process: thousands of small gestures piled tenderly on top of one another, like sediment, like music. The colors arrived the way chords arrive in improvisation — lavender easing into warm ochre, coral flaring briefly beside periwinkle blue, a note of rust appearing and then receding into the general shimmer. There is no center, no focal hierarchy. The painting simply is, everywhere at once, the way ambient sound fills a room without asking you to listen to any single frequency. To spend time with this work is to slow down. The eye drifts, finds a cluster of marks, loses it again, and discovers something else. Arenson describes his practice as listening to his body — and standing before this canvas, the viewer is invited into that same quality of attentiveness: quiet, present, open to what the next moment will reveal.
