There is a moment in improvised music — Bret knows it well from years on stage in San Francisco and Paris — when the hand stops thinking and simply moves. This painting is that moment, stretched across canvas and held there. Standing in his Schoonmaker Building studio on the Sausalito waterfront, he picked up a brush and the marks began: a white swipe, a burgundy curve, a yellow flick, a navy coil. Then another. Then hundreds more, each one arriving before the last had fully dried, each one answering the ones before it the way a chord answers a question. The warm brown ground is not neutral; it breathes. It is the colour of earth, of wood, of the studio floor, of time. Against it the marks feel like a field of small living things — seeds, sparks, musical notation for an unwritten score. Nothing dominates. Nothing recedes entirely. The eye moves across the surface the way attention moves through a long piece of music: restless, discovering, occasionally surprised by a yellow accent or a dark navy loop that arrives exactly where it is needed. What remains is not a record of effort but of presence — a whole hour, or morning, or session compressed into a single breathing surface. To live with this painting is to live with that quality of attention, that willingness to let the next gesture reveal what the last one made possible.
