Every morning Bret Arenson walks into his studio in the Schoonmaker Building and faces a blank canvas — and then he listens. Not to a plan, not to a sketch, but to the body itself: the weight of the arm, the pull of a breath, the memory of a guitar phrase still humming somewhere behind the eyes. This painting is the accumulated record of that listening. Each small gesture was placed once, unrepeatable, and then another followed, and another, until the canvas held an entire interior season. Look at the way the blues drift and gather like fog coming off Richardson Bay in the early morning, the warm ochres rising through like sunlight finding the water's surface. The pale creams catch and scatter like foam. The deep mossy darks anchor it all, giving the eye somewhere to rest before it moves on again. There is no single focal point because there was no single moment — this is time made visible, the slow accumulation of being present in a room with paint and a canvas and nothing else required. For those who stand in front of this work, something shifts. The busyness of the surface eventually gives way to a profound stillness — the same paradox at the heart of Bret's practice, where spontaneous action and deep quiet arrive at the same place. It is a painting about paying attention, and it asks the same of us.
